Words of wisdom from Donnie Yen star of "Ip Man"
Topic: Martial Arts

Donnie Yen’s Five Rules of Martial Arts Mastery

1. Turn your basic movements - regardless of style - into perfect jewels. If you accomplish this, you’ll have a good chance of becoming an advanced practitioner sooner than you may expect. Like good WuShu or even western boxing, extreme basic training is the only real secret for excellence.

2. Train your body athletically. Probably the most lacking aspect of modern practitioners, your overall physical condition, regardless of style - internal or external - is crucial to sustain long periods of often painful training.

3. Emphasize "fa jing" in your techniques. Top Western boxers exhibit fa jing as much as top Asian martial artists. Start with traditional Chinese styles to learn this crucial use of energy.

4. Strive for versatility and a wide exposure to different disciplines. After some years developing a specialty, force yourself to obtain at least intermediate skill in a few other styles completely different from yours.

5. Train for both combat and beauty of movement. Contrary to popular belief, a serious practitioner can achieve excellent fighting ability while looking fantastic. Always remember that top western boxers are as engaging to watch as contemporary WuShu athletes. Don’t be scared of one or the other.

The student teacher relationship.

The student should respect the teacher for time and effort he has invested in getting the knowledge and skills that he/she has acquired and also the teacher should be respected for having a desire to share this knowledge for the benefit of others. The teacher did not gain this knowledge for free, even if he did not pay for it with money, time , effort , blood and sweat were paid to get the Kung Fu. The student should not expect anything from the teacher for free. Many teachers are modest and do not want to even discuss money. If you cannot pay your Sifu and he has decided he will still teach you, you need to do something in return for your teacher's graciousness. Don’t ask your Sifu what you should do, look around. There is always something that needs to be done, when you notice….go do it. Always have proper respect for your Sifu and use your best manners. You should immediately dismiss any notion that your Sifu will somehow magically transform you into a super being, all he can do is tell you which way to walk. You have to do the walking yourself. Eventually you will get where you want to be.

The teacher must understand, that it's not about you (the teacher). Many who teach martial arts became teachers in order to have people worship them. Once again…it's not about you. It IS about the mental, physical, and spiritual development of the student. It is wrong to take advantage of your with relationship with your students simply to satisfy your own needs. As teachers we must remain humble and not personally identify with how important what we do actually is. One more time…it's not about you.

Subject: 5th Anniversary

Dear Moy Yat Ving Tsun Kung Fu Family,

We will be celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Grand Opening of the
Mokwoon on Saturday, May 9th, 2009. To commemorate the event, we will
be having certificate ceremonies, and Sifu will be giving a lecture.
Afterwords, we will go to eat in Chinatwon.

The event is scheduled for 12:30pm. I'm hoping everyone who had a hand
in building the school and keeping it going and lively for the past 5
years will be able to make it. You should all be very proud.

Sandy...

Kung Fu
Topic: Ving Tsun

For those who study Kung Fu, consider the following...

Is your skill at the level you would like it to be?

If not, how much time do you spend perfecting your Kung Fu?

How far past your comfort zone do you push yourself?

Do you stop when your mind tells you to stop or when your body tells you to stop?

Many spend a lot of time practicing "intellectual kung fu" and very little time practicing actual kung fu.

Impulse Power
Topic: Metaphysics

“I have no doubt that the evolutionary process—from the big bang to the present moment—is not merely a random, meaningless event. If one stands back and takes a good, hard look at the entire sweep of the process, all the way from its earliest beginnings, one can see undeniable direction and even, I dare say, purpose in its majestic unfolding. But who or what initiated that process? What energy or intelligence made the choice to take that first miraculous leap from formlessness to form, from nothing whatsoever to energy and light to matter to life to consciousness to self-reflective awareness? Such an audacious move, that instantaneous leap from nothing to the beginning of everything, could only have been made by a force that was nothing less than Godlike. That impulse, that evolutionary impulse, is what I call God. That same impulse is not separate from the most important part of each and every one of us, from our uniquely human drive to create and innovate and, most significantly, from our will to consciously evolve.” – Andrew Cohen
