The student teacher relationship. The student should respect the teacher for time and effort he has invested in getting the knowledge and skills that he/she has acquired and also the teacher should be respected for having a desire to share this knowledge for the benefit of others. The teacher did not gain this knowledge for free, even if he did not pay for it with money, time , effort , blood and sweat were paid to get the Kung Fu. The student should not expect anything from the teacher for free. Many teachers are modest and do not want to even discuss money. If you cannot pay your Sifu and he has decided he will still teach you, you need to do something in return for your teacher's graciousness. Don’t ask your Sifu what you should do, look around. There is always something that needs to be done, when you notice….go do it. Always have proper respect for your Sifu and use your best manners. You should immediately dismiss any notion that your Sifu will somehow magically transform you into a super being, all he can do is tell you which way to walk. You have to do the walking yourself. Eventually you will get where you want to be. The teacher must understand, that it's not about you (the teacher). Many who teach martial arts became teachers in order to have people worship them. Once again…it's not about you. It IS about the mental, physical, and spiritual development of the student. It is wrong to take advantage of your with relationship with your students simply to satisfy your own needs. As teachers we must remain humble and not personally identify with how important what we do actually is. One more time…it's not about you. -Sifu

For those who study Kung Fu, consider the following... Is your skill at the level you would like it to be? If not, how much time do you spend perfecting your Kung Fu? How far past your comfort zone do you push yourself? Do you stop when your mind tells you to stop or when your body tells you to stop? Many spend a lot of time practicing "intellectual kung fu" and very little time practicing actual kung fu. -Sifu

Metaphysical Kung Fu Metaphysics: a division of philosophy that is concerned with the fundamental nature of reality and being and that includes ontology, cosmology, and often epistemology (from www.m-w.com) Your understanding and experience of your place in the universe and concept of God is something you have to discover for yourself. What has worked for me and what I recommend is that those so inclined seek out a method that is a “spiritual discipline” as opposed to a “belief system”. What I mean by spiritual discipline is a method and practice that fosters spiritual growth and self knowledge as evidenced in the way one relates to himself and others. This method also engenders mental, physical, and spiritual well being. Another quality that characterizes a spiritual discipline is that practice leads to deeper understanding, which leads to improved results, which leads to better practice, and the cycle continues. There are a variety of practices that fit this definition; the challenge is to find one that works for you. Kung Fu = Skill acquired through hard work. I am of the opinion that healthy living is a skill; although we live we are not born knowing how to live. Physical conflict studied within the context of Kung Fu is a microcosm of life. How do we master what is under our control (mind, body, spirit) in a way that allows us to deal in a constructive way with things that are not under our control. In studying Kung Fu we are training to realize an optimum way of being. In this way Kung Fu can be considered a form of metaphysical study. -Sifu
